How was people’s food consumption before using technology and discovering preservatives and additives?

It may be difficult to perceive dietary trends without these, given how reliant people have become. However, there was a time when none were utilized, and food was most simplistic. From then until now, there have been consequential changes with regard to how people’s diets changed.

With the world’s constant progress, more changes are expected to surface. Whether that involves how people prepare food or what ingredients become more favored by the human palate, trends in food will continue to evolve depending on where people’s creativity and demands take them.

So, what may be expected in the future?

How Has the Human Diet Evolved?

Generations of Good Food, a cookbook by Eleanor Gaccetta, is among the many materials that capture how dishes have evolved. By the name itself, the author picked significant meals from six different generations of her mother’s family for more people to recognize and appreciate, showing how distinct meals and preferences have been through time.

The book captures the progress and changes in eating habits over the years and the intricate and colorful path people have taken to enhance their experience.

A Prevalence in Healthier Options Now

There are a lot of reasons why people’s diets changed.

Creativity, natural progression, and demands may be some of those.

In recent years, there has been a notable change in food consumption pre and post-pandemic as the world’s focus shifted to preventive nutrition. With the widespread health risk repercussions, people have observed more health-conscious habits.

Today, over two-thirds of consumers have switched to healthier choices since the outbreak, and unhealthy snacking habits have significantly decreased. All it took was one epidemic for most to part ways with their vices and pay more attention to what they’re consuming.

Indeed, people’s diets changed solely because of preemptive health measures. They proactively took a significant step toward a healthier lifestyle due to a pressing risk. This illustrates how easy it can be for people’s dietary trends to evolve and what factors they have to constantly consider when making their choices.

But the Path Hadn’t Always Been Healthy

A lot of things have improved since the 90s.

With supermarkets making their existence known in communities, the period introduced a wider range of products to people. This sparked the move toward faster food preparation as consumers grew accustomed to ready-to-eat options. Food evolution has continued on an upward spiral since. People’s diets changed, but things hadn’t always looked bright. Changes pointed towards a more detrimental spot, with obesity becoming a major health risk due to new fads.

The 2000s prompted a boost in fast food restaurants as people’s favorites. With this rising demand, capitalistic mindsets took advantage and fed people with larger portions to keep them coming back. Since then, snacking has continued to rise, and healthier options have been buried over enjoyable diets.

Why Have People’s Diet Changed Over Time?

This constant tug-of-war between healthy and unhealthy lifestyles paints a picture of how easily people’s diets changed in the past. It presents what factors commonly influence them to make frequent and significant shifts in the food they eat.

Trends. Demands. Preferences. Risks – these are some of the typical motivators that push people to constantly adjust their palates. Primarily because these also influence what dishes and food deals communities present to the people.

As the world progresses, society has to catch up with regard to what they provide. This drives more changes and adjustments in people’s palates and preferences. Not to mention, the rise in processed options may have also caused people to suffer from intolerance.

From a more extensive perspective, people’s diets changed over time because of technological advancements, cultural influences, and globalization. These have caused significant changes in the array of food that’s accessible to people.

Fortunately, trends didn’t become all doom and gloom with the regular reality check on people’s health. Recent periods have brought forth significant “clean eating” movements among health-conscious people that sparked healthier shifts in their diet. The trend in healthier eating has been slow to catch on as obesity remains a significant health issue for many people. There is a concerted effort to reduce unhealthy eating with healthy lifestyles that include both diet and exercise.

So, what can be expected in the future?

What Are Some Trends to Look Forward to?

The most obvious thing people can anticipate in the future is a constant stream of ideas within the food industry. With continuous technological advancements, the world will always proactively look for ways to incorporate these in their lifestyles, such as in their consumption. Many of the advancements include dietary trends for consumption of healthy levels of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats.

Dietary trends will also need persistent adjustments and production check-ups, especially with the possible shortage due to environmental challenges. The world may also have to welcome the idea of unique alternatives for its diets. In fact, there’s already an ongoing contemplation of incorporating insect or plant-based substitutes into the market.

The urge to prevent food shortage and malnutrition has influenced innovations and trends across people’s dietary options.
